Missionary at this point The Good: - Tom still hasn’t found a way to kill himself (the stunts are great!) - The villain is a nice foil for Tom The Not So Good: - The film feels incomplete (2 parters aren’t always necessary) - The villain could’ve been better established So, the Mission Impossible series of films is a rarity among franchises as it has managed to maintain its popularity and quality over the almost 3 decades it’s been running. Tom Cruise is so dedicated to his craft (or desperate to meet god) that he is willing to put himself in the type of situations that make film studios and producers’ asses squeeze tight enough to make diamonds, and all for our entertainment. This latest instalment has been given a bit of a promotional boost as it’s a Part 1 of 2; a feat usually reserved for end of franchise movies. The story is a good one; definitely in line with the other films and the action is, as usual, on par with the good that has come before it however, there are three niggling issues with this one. Firstly, the villain Gabriel is a damn good villain; a great dark mirror of Ethan however, his backstory is meant to paint him as Ethan’s nemesis and it comes off as weak when you consider how much we already know about Ethan. Secondly, I found that this film feels like incomplete. Now obviously, this is a part 1 of 2, so yes it should feel incomplete however, unlike something like Kill Bill Vol. 1 where the film feels like it reached a genuine stop point, this film feels like they took the final act of it and chopped it off. I’m pretty sure that part 2 will be a great film and will probably make this statement redundant but as it stands, I feel what I feel. The final issue isn’t actually one of this films but rather with a film that came before it. There’s an action sequence in MI:DR that is almost beat for beat, a repeat of a sequence in a film released earlier this year. Also, at the climax of MI, there’s another aspect that is reminiscent of that same film. All in all, I enjoyed this film but I didn’t leave anticipating Part 2. 7.5/10 #filmreview #moviereview #reeldealreviews #missionimpossible #missionimpossibledeadreckoning #fyp is connected to @neilthereeldeal, 6 hashtag signals, and 0.01 impact score.
